30/04/10 - Deborah Dunleavy visited the Rathbone youth charity on April 30th

Based on Chorley Street in Bolton, Rathbone enables young people who have experienced problems such as bullying, family breakdown and learning difficulties to re-engage in education or move on to work.

Rathbone’s centre boasts a construction unit and motor vehicle repair shop plus other facilities where young people can learn practical trades. Many move on to apprenticeships.

Amongst those Deborah met was Halliwell resident, Jodie Barlow. The former Withins High School student (pictured) is taking her first steps in the childcare profession with Rathbone. Currently completing the Entry to Employment programme, which teaches life skills and improves Numeracy and Literacy, the 17-year-old is about to go on work placement at a local nursery school.

Deborah toured the centre and joined around 50 young people in a question and answer session on topics such as how to combat youth unemployment and the need for more youth clubs like the Bolton Lads Club (visited recently by David Cameron).
