You may have received a card through the door today; this is concerning a plan by the Labour party to place islands in the middle of Bury road. This will turn Bury road into a single lane road. At the present time during rush hour and at peak times traffic forms two lanes, however at a recent meeting at the Town Hall Councillor Lynda Byrne described any driver who forms a second lane as an irresponsible driver
At the same meeting she informed the meeting how she had been hit by a car that was forming a second lane of traffic just outside what was the old Breightmet Police Station.
Apparently she failed to notice that by walking just 10 yards further up Bury Road and using the Pelican crossing such accidents may be avoided.
We believe that forcing cars into one lane will cause traffic chaos as the capacity of the road will be cut in half at peak times. Traffic will run into the surrounding roads turning your local streets and roads into rat runs. Many drivers will take routes that are some distance from Bury Road if it means that they will be able to cut their journey time by just a few minutes.
This could mean an increase of hundreds of cars per day - driving past your home at speed - twice a day.
Many of you will be driving those cars and this scheme may mean that it takes up to 20 minutes longer to drive to and from work.
In previous years some Conservative voters have said to us they havent got time to vote as they are having their tea - if this plan is instigated those people will be having their tea 20 minutes later every night.
The Labour party say that this scheme will not cause congestion - this is just fantasy island politics.
The choice is now with you - vote Conservative on May the 1st and if we take control we will stop this scheme from taking place.
If you dont vote or vote for another party and Labour win in Tonge with the Haulgh or Breightmet this scheme will go ahead.
We are not against road safety but we believe that this scheme will cause more accidents on other roads and endanger the lives of those residents- particularly children, who live in the surrounding area.
Bury road does need a traffic scheme but our scheme will be a common sense plan.
We will increase funding for driver education which we believe will give a much bigger return on accident reduction and we promise to consult you as residents before we give a green light to any scheme
Some of our ideas for Bury road are,
1) The application of antiskid paint on all approaches to junctions to prevent rear end shunts
2) The installation of safety railings, where needed, to prevent cycles or pedestrians entering the carriage way
3) To explore the possibility of installing traffic lights at Ainsworth lane and Blenheim Road
4) To explore the possibility of moving the crossing at Tonge Fold as it is currently positioned to service the old Co-Op. In repositioning the crossing it would take into consideration the increase in foot fall further east this would be of better service to the community
5) Reinstate the Road Safety Committee to work with schools on road safety
